Elements of Nature
Elements of Nature is inspired by the way natural forms and materials, including the man-made, transform the environment creating intricate patterns and textures. From the growth of moss on stone walls, to the rich earthy hues of rusted metal caused by rain and industrial run-off, to the wild mushrooms growing on fallen trees. These organic elements serves as the foundation for the creative process, explored by reinterpreting the beauty of nature through textiles.
Creating works that not only visually represent the beauty of nature but also evoke a sensory response is achieved by combining a variety of processes and materials, playing with different textures and weights to add depth and dimension to each piece. This diversity in materials evokes experimentation, pushing the boundaries of traditional textile art. The essence of moss, leaves, and fungi is captured by employing a combination of hand-dyed fabric and sheep’s locks, embroidery, and fabric manipulation. Finding ways to replicate the delicate balance of colours and textures found in nature was both challenging and rewarding. The final pieces not only visually represent nature but also hold an interactive quality, viewers are encouraged to touch and feel the different textures, providing a multi-sensory experience.
This collection represents the foundation for future exploration. Employing new techniques and extended materials, combining both textile and foraged elements to exemplify how human interaction changes and decays the environment. By continuing to create textile art that not only captures the beauty of the natural world but also encourages others to appreciate and connect with it to heighten our awareness of touch, texture, and the natural world.
